Data & Business Intelligence Case Study
Multi-Campus Education Analytics & Reporting
A Power BI reporting engagement supporting operational monitoring and management reporting for an international education organization with approximately 30 campuses across six cities. Reports were primarily used to support operations in Iraq and were provided to authorized management and operational users.
Project Overview
The reporting environment brought together data from student information systems, Microsoft Lists, SharePoint surveys, Excel and CSV exports, and other approved operational sources. Power BI reports helped authorized users review enrollment, attendance, survey, operational, and performance-related information through consistent and interactive reporting experiences.
Project Context and My Role
The work was completed as part of a 5–6 person IT team. Business priorities and management communication were generally coordinated by the Head of IT. Responsibilities focused on Power BI dashboard design, Power BI Service publishing, access management, report updates based on user feedback, and user support.
- Designed and updated Power BI dashboards
- Published and maintained reports in Power BI Service
- Managed report access for authorized users
- Updated reports based on user feedback
- Supported management and operational users with report usage
- Contributed to data preparation, modeling, calculations, and refresh configuration
Data Sources and Integration
Direct database access was not available. Reporting solutions therefore used approved APIs, controlled exports, SharePoint-based sources, and structured files.
- Jupiter SIS API
- Jupiter SIS Excel and CSV exports
- Microsoft Lists
- SharePoint survey data
- Excel-based operational data
- Power Automate-supported workflows
Reporting Workflow
Approved source systems and structured files
→ Power Query transformation
→ Power BI data model
→ DAX calculations and report design
→ Power BI Service publishing
→ Scheduled data refresh
→ Authorized reporting users
Some datasets refreshed daily, while others used more frequent scheduled refresh cycles based on reporting needs.
Dashboard and Reporting Capabilities
- Student enrollment reporting
- Attendance and absence analysis
- Survey result reporting
- Operational monitoring
- Performance-related reporting
- Time and period comparisons
- Interactive filtering with slicers
- Drill-through navigation
- Report tooltips
- Conditional formatting
Data Preparation and Modeling
Power Query was used for data cleaning, shaping, and transformation. Data from multiple approved sources was combined into a consistent model with defined relationships. DAX measures supported reporting calculations and date/period comparisons, and reusable modeling patterns were applied where appropriate.
Security and Access Control
Row-Level Security was used to restrict report data according to authorized user responsibilities. Access was controlled through Power BI Service permissions and role-based report access to protect confidential educational and organizational data.
- Power BI Row-Level Security
- Role-based report access
- Power BI Service permissions
- Controlled report distribution
- Protection of confidential educational and organizational data
Publishing, Refresh, and User Support
Reports were published to Power BI Service with scheduled refresh configured per dataset. The work included managing access and permissions, supporting refresh schedules (daily and more frequent where required), responding to user feedback, and assisting users with report access and usage.

Professional Contribution
The engagement combined technical dashboard development with ongoing operational support. Responsibilities included translating reporting needs into usable dashboards, maintaining access controls, supporting multiple data sources, and improving reports through iterative feedback from authorized users. The work was carried out alongside other IT team members and coordinated through the Head of IT.
